I would also just like to take a chance to say that, while I didn’t like Oliver’s approach or answer either, to me, it’s not coming from a place of biphobia. I think he made a mistake, and it came across poorly and at a bad time. He’s proven since that first kiss that he cares deeply about Buck’s sexuality — from the start, when he took to his Instagram stories to tell off people who were being rude about it, to recently, with his polite and specific correction to the interviewer who said Buck’s sexuality had changed — and about Buck as a whole. I have my own feelings about the breakup, about how things have been handled, and all of it. But I’ve been seeing more people say that he doesn’t actually care, or never did, and of course I don’t begrudge anyone their anger or sadness or frustration. But personally, this flub does not make me rescind my appreciation for his work.

people will cry about representation for years and years and then say the most blatantly homophobic things about canon queer characters for no reason

most of the time i don’t even think it’s worth engaging with this stuff because it’s stupid and continues to illustrate a lack of understanding about. stories and fiction and such. but like. the new Thing from people who don’t like eddie or buddie or whatever is being like “eddie stans care about a sexuality arc more than anything else! it’s always about eddie’s sexuality! there are other things to explore!” and the thing is that yeah, i’m sure there are people who are only interested in him being gay (which is fine?) and yeah, obviously there are other things. but like. the thing that people forget in a myriad of ways is that eddie is not buck. for a character like eddie, defined by lifelong expectations and repression and a very specific struggle with the idea of Family, the symbolism of his sexuality holds a lot more weight than the just the fact of his attraction to men (in his STORY, not in-universe!). this is not to say that buck can’t or doesn’t have complex feelings about his bisexuality, but insofar as his actual character arc, his coming out doesn’t actually touch much on a lot of the things he’s been reckoning with as a character: what his purpose is, his parental trauma and abandonment issues, his struggle to actually recognize his wants, his pathological need to please. but for eddie, coming out could and would involve a lot of that specific character growth: reckoning with the expectations everyone has always had for him, being able to self-discover, accepting and putting his wants and needs first for once rather than repressing them, rethinking what a family might look like and his place in it, maybe understanding some of his own mistakes, and continuing to be the best version of himself for his son. like yes he will also be into men and into buck specifically but this is all eddie’s specific baggage; his sexuality is a representation of his Whole Self, rather than the repressed self that caused him and the people around him pain. that’s why it’s so important to eddie understanders to see it 🫶🏽

this post is only for the select few but sometimes i think about bucktommy going to a gay club and buck dancing and making out with other guys while tommy watches them and he's totally absolutely completely turned on by the fact that he's being watched while tommy's turned on by the knowledge that at the end of the night - at the end of every night - he's the one who buck will go home with anyway

thinking about why Tommy didn't reach back out to Buck after the tour, and what I've landed on is this: Tommy was thinking about it from a potential romance/date scenario from the get-go and thought the ball was in Buck's court.
at this point, Tommy has no idea that Buck believes he's straight; all he knows is that Buck called him up for a tour, but he doesn't know why - he even asks Buck about it twice, and Buck can't really articulate an answer (because he doesn't know the real why himself). but Buck seems into him - he's flirting, Tommy's testing the waters and flirting back and he's getting a good response, so he drops the flying lessons invitation. and then the cute guy asks him out for a beer! hey, this is great, except for the plans he's already had and isn't going to bail on. but Tommy's thinking, hey, Buck's got his number so he'll reach out if he's still interested.
and then he doesn't reach out! so Tommy thinks, okay, maybe he wasn't interested after all, a little disappointing but it's fine, even if Buck's not into him he's still made a new friend in Eddie. then basketball happens, and it's a group activity and Tommy has no idea Buck is there for him specifically, that Buck doesn't even like basketball.
when Tommy goes to have the conversation with Buck - it's only during the conversation that he realizes, I was right all along, this guy is into me and I'm into him, and I'm not letting another opportunity with him pass by. so he shoots his shot and it's a unqualified success - Buck kisses him back and agrees to a dinner date. everything's coming up Tommy

Tommy steps into his quiet house alone.
His keys jingle as he drops them in the dish by the door. The sound doesn't so much break the silence as punctuate it. He makes his way to the kitchen in the dark.
The light in the fridge is too bright in his eyes and he's quick to grab the brita pitcher. Dots dance in his vision as his hands dance the familiar routine of cupboard-glass-pill-drink-swallow. He sets his glass down in the sink. It's empty, otherwise; in his pre-date jitters, when he'd thought there was a chance he wouldn't be coming home alone, he'd emptied the dirty dishes into the dishwasher. So much for that.
He doesn't need light as he navigates to his bedroom. It's the same old choreography: dumping his clothes in the hamper, brushing his teeth, crawling into bed. When he plugs in his phone, the screen flares to life. It's barely 11. It had been nice, for a while, living in a world where this time was different. He settles in bed and settles back into the white-noise static he's been living in for years now.
And then, a week later, he gets a text:
hey, id like to talk. can we get coffee?

am i the only one who doesn’t like the eddie x priest trend going around???
i fully believe that would just ruin the buck/eddie situation. like, yeah i understand that buck dated tommy first so it’s only fair that eddie gets to date someone else too.
but on a real note- it’s always been understood (at least on my tumblr feed) that this is how the buddie dynamic works.
buck needs to realize his sexuality before he realizes he’s in love with eddie. eddie needs to realize he’s in love with buck before he can realize his sexuality.
if eddie learns he’s not straight because of a crush/date/hookup with the priest- then we’re just in a never ending loop of “these two idiots” just constantly missing each other.

no but like. i’m just reflecting on it since that ep. what if they really DID do neurodivergent buck. like how insane would that be. actually cannot explain how much that would mean and like i have no expectation but equally that was the most canon confirmation we’ve ever had. like. idk

i LOVE Bucks female love interests. were many of them used as plot devices and not fleshed out enough? yes. but do i still love and appreciate them? yes! I love Buddie, but don’t hate a female character just bc she “gets in the way” of a gay ship!
(same with Eddies girlfriends & Shannon!!)

When Lena confronts Eddie in Malfunction, because Eddie says, "I thought we were friends," and Lena is like "I know all this shit you're going through, like your dead wife and your kid, and you don't even know if I have a cat or not," but this whole time Eddie is hiding what he's going through and how he's feeling from Buck........this is something, right? Something about how he can't bring himself to open up to Buck because he's afraid of what that vulnerability might lead to, versus dumping it all on a near stranger who he doesn't have to worry will actually try to care too much about him.

my theory after a few days of thinking is that this is a temporary breakup, tommy will be back in 8b
that's the only way anything in 8x05 makes sense, especially the last scene at the cemetery, why film it like that if tommy isn't coming back?
